Maha Shivaratri

 Maha Shivaratri

The History of Shivaratri, Purnas contain many fest stories and legends describing the origin of this festival. Accosarding to one, during the samudra manthan, a pot of posiion emerged from the ocean. This terrified the Gods and demons as the posion was capable of destroyin the entire world, and they ran to Shiva for help.
Shivaratri, it is said, is the convergence of Shiva and Shakti the masculine and feminine energies which balance the world. According to the Drik Panchang, while in the south, chaturdashi tithi during Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha, is known as ‘Maha Shivaratri’, as per the north Indian calendar, Masik Shivaratri in the month of Phalguna is known as Maha Shivaratri. The festival, however, is celebrated on the same day. And unlike other Indian festivals, which are about fervour, Maha Shivratri is a more solemn affair, marked with internal reflection and introspection.

As per the Hindu calendar, Shivratri is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Maagha.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the festival owes its origins to several versions, one of them being a celebration of Shiva and Parvati's marriage to each other.

Maha Shivaratri is an annual festival dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and is particularly important in the Shaivism tradition of Hinduism. Unlike most Hindu festivals which are celebrated during the day, the Maha Shivaratri is celebrated at night. Every lunar month, there is a Shivaratri (12 per year).

Maha Shivratri 2021 or the 'Great night of Shiva', is one of the major festivals in Hinduism dedicated to worshipping Lord Shiva.
